Keywords remain at the center of it all when it comes to SEO. Select the right phrases for your business and you are well on your way. Select the wrong ones and you will be fighting an uphill battle from the get go. So how do you know what the right phrases are?
This is part science and part art. The basic logic behind keyword identification is to try and anticipate what your customers and potential customers would type into a search engine to find your type of business. For example, if I was looking for help with my SEO strategy for my manufacturing company in Colorado Springs, I might type Colorado Springs SEO into Google or another search engine. However, I might just as easily type in Colorado Springs Search Engine Optimization services. Do I pick both, or just the one as keywords?
The first part of selecting the right keywords is to determine the most popular phrases used for your type of business. It’s kind of like if you want to catch fish you need to fish where the fish are. If you select keywords that no one types into a search engine, the there is no reason for your business to show up in search results.
The second part of keyword selection is competition. Keeping with the fishing analogy… You also want to fish where there are not too many fishermen. That means more fish for you to catch with little or no competition. You want to select keywords that have little competition, avoiding keywords other companies have also selected and are trying to center their SEO strategy around.
Google provides some tools to help determine the right keywords. However, it is absolutely critical you get this right and you may want to seek out a SEO firm with a proven track record to help you’re your keywords.
